     Never Say Never Again was made by Warner Bros. They purchased a few of the rights of Bond but didn’t have rights to Q, the James Bond Theme, the bullet barrel intro, etc… And they didnt use a unused 007 story. They simply remade ThunderBall.

       The title “Never Say Never Again” was given as a message to Sean Connery. Mr. Connery had stated after his last Bond film that he would never play 007 again. After being persuaded by the director, writers, producer, and production company to once again become James Bond, they aptly named the spin-off movie “Never Say Never Again.”

   Good observation 🙂 However, Never Say Never Again is looked upon as being an unofficial edition of sorts, which is why it’s never counted in the total list of 22 released movies (23 if Bond 23 is ever coming out).

   Casino Royale inspired me to up the hours in the gym to achieve Bond-like abs.

   Mission accomplished! My girl ordered me one of those Bond-speedo mankinis, and it actually looks good.

   I even have a PPK… maybe I missed my calling to be a secret agent.

       Not true. Casino was Ian’s first book. It’s first TV debut was a bit hokey yes, but wasn’t originally intended to be a spoof, just the way it turned out.

    I’ve seen all the james bond movies and I have the vcr or dvd and I love them all but daniel is really good and I like him next to sean. thx for the list i want to rewatch them in order. My mom was a spy during ww2 and James Bond is cool.

    I’ve see all movies of james bond I love them all but Pierce Brosnan is verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood, & I like him I want to rewatch them in order & I’m waiting for next series in bond as soon as possible for example SKYFALL in Danial Craig.

        The 1953 Casino Royale was not a spoof. Casino Royale was done in Black n White with an American Actor portraying Jimmy Bond. Peter Lorre was the bad guy. It was actually made for TV. I have it on VHS. The Casino Royale that was a spoof had David Niven as James Bond and was made in the sixties.

    Sean is the best Bond by far. Timothy Dalton is the best looking by far in the eye of this beholder. All the bond movies on Encore this month so I’m catching up on all I missed. Thanks for the info on Never Say Never (theme song sung by my fav Lani Hall).BTW I had a James Bond doll in 1964. Whatever happened to it? I dont know but I had the little gun that shot real caps until I was an adult and it disappeared.

    I think the true James Bond will always be Sean Connery. I do, however, love Pierce Brosnan, so he’s my second favorite 007. It was mind blowing to see the difference in cost of production! Whoa!

    I’ve read every James Bond nove and short story (including a young Bond story called “003 1/2”) except the Young Bond series that starts with Silverfin (a play on Goldfinger?). Sean Connery created the archetypal movie screen Bond. George Lazenby was great–as was the movie, OHMSS (although the villain’s plot was a little hard to grasp–cow disease?). Lazenby should have taken Lois (Miss Moneypenny) Maxwell’s advice and behaved himself. He might have done a few more Bonds. Roger Moore’s movies were entertaining, but his Bond movies were often too lightweight because they often went for a laugh and destroyed our conception of Bond. Often the Moore movies were silly (Bond in arab dress on a camel in TSWLM–I believe with Lawrence of Arabia music in the background. This kind of nonsense disrespects the character movie goers have come to see. This “camel” idea was the fault of a producer or director who finally allowed it, not Moore–unless he (with his obvious sense of humor) promoted it In Octopussy, find the scene where Moore’s line is “That’s for 009!”: one of the rare times in the movie we get to see Roger Moore’s emotional intensity as a serious James Bond (quite apart from the action scenes in which any actor would have to play it straight as does Roger Moore). In Moonraker, Bond defeats an anaconda in the water. Well, we’ve referenced Lawrence of Arabia, so now what? Tarzan! This kind of nonsense destroys the fragile suspension of disbelief required for parts of all Bond movies in the first place. Dalton was great in bringing back a more serious Bond–until that boyish grin in scenes with Maryam d’Abo that make him a love-lorn schoolboy instead of a mature man of the world. Pierce Brosnan was fine and the producers and directors were once again taking Bond seriously (if not some of the stunts: a helicopter flying too slow at an angle to use its rotors as weapons as no copter could in Tomorrow Never Dies–never think too hard about them, the stunts in these movies). Taking the character of Bond seriously is always a good idea–even when allowing him the occasional wry comment. I was one of those who was appalled by the casting of a blond Bond. But Daniel Craig is excellent. He has the physical heft, as did Connery, that allows one to believe he could be a roughneck commando in the Special Boat Service of 1944, as Bond was reported to be (but not in John Pearson’s James Bond: The Authorized Biography of 007 [Pyramid Books, 1973] where Pearson has him doing Department of Naval Intelligence work on the continent). Of course, the James Bond saga has a great continuity problem. There’s no way a WWII commando is bungy jumping off a Soviet dam in 1995. It’s got to be a different man. Some writer has to write the story of how many different men have been sent out on the 007 Project (within the Double O branch of the S.I.S) under the cover name of James Bond to continue the legend and confound the enemies of the United Kingdom. Once that story is told, continuity will no longer be a problem, and the Bond saga can soar centuries into the future.

      Mr Fogg, Even thoough the 2nd Casino Royale (1967 I think) was a spoof on the spy genre, it DID address the question of who was James BOnd really. It had James BOnd as a title given to various Assassins over time just as you suggest someone write the story about. So even though it was a spoof it actually does contribute to the background informatin of James BOnd… (I thought it was a ver funny movie mself for what it was. and it is a sneaky one to throw in when challenging someone to name all the actors wo played James Bond… )

    Nice List’,

    In my humble opinion, Roger Moore is the best Bond! I always enjoyed his punch lines before killing one of his adversaries, he had plenty of “whit”. As far as a realistic Bond, no doubt; Daniel Craig, he is physically realistic and passionate during fight scenes, although Sean Connery was pretty robust in his days, but like Connery said, “the gadgets in the films were becoming ridiculous”. Pierce Brosnan is my least favorite. I would like to see all 007’s in the next film as retired MI6 Agents, and then reveal James Bond’s cover name as his birth Name, each with a different name. Although I don’t think Connery would show up as an extra, but the Bond fans would love it!

    There have been three ‘Casino Royale’ films made and along with David NIVEN’s comedy we should include the American Bond, Barry NELSON.

    This was a TV movie and also starred Peter LORRE as Le CHIFFRE. As I recall the Australian Michael PATE is also in the cast.

    Daniel Craig the best bond ever, Sorry Sean Connery, you were always my favourite until Daniel Craig.
    Never really been a James Bond Movie fan, but saw Skyfall yesterday, my first James Bond movie since Sean Connery. Loved It that much I saw it twice. Hopefully Daniel Craig will be in many more to come. Javier Bardem was awesome as well. Made me fall in love with James Bond all over again.

    Thanks for the great list! I am a huge 007 fan, have been all my life, own all the movies, watched each one many times… I was getting very upset with the directors and producers after watching Casino royal and Quantum of solace, because they were loosing the plot a bit…? Bond movies need to start in a certain way, silowets of naked women with long flowing hair diving and swimming, looking down the barrel of the gun etc etc etc, its tradition, thats how they all have to start. Big band music with epic theme songs… And there are certain things that make James James, his Astin Martin, his Walther PPK, etc, the producers seemed to be loosing sight of these iconic bond things and they lost the plot in the last two movies.
    Well, I’ve just watched Sky fall, and YAY, they have finally gotten back to basics!!! I am so glad! It is an awesome bond movie which will rate up there with the greats once again :-).
    PS – Sean Connery is still the one and only, original, James Bond, though DC, PB, and RM were all good too.

    When Ian Fleming saw the previews of Sean Connery in “Dr. No,” he was said to have exclaimed “Dreadful! Simply dreadful.”
    When George Lazenby was approached to do another Bond movie, he declined because he felt that the Bond franchise wasn’t going anywhere. Pete Best, anybody?

      As in so many instances the film makers have to screw around with the book. I wish they’d stick to the author’s work.

      The “Moonraker” movie surely must be the biggest load of bovine excreta ever made – the only similarity I can see between novel and film is the title and the name of the villian, DRAX. There is no connection between an ex Nazi bent on revenge by firing a rocket on London and a mad scientist who plans to re start the human race by selective breeding from a colony of humans in space.

      Roger MOORE the best BOND? I must disagree.

      If you look at the pure character before the film makers got at it and made such bovine excreta as ‘Moonraker’ you would see someone who is a Navy Officer but not quite the gentleman.

      BOND is a thug and MOORE’s films make him to be in many instances somewhat of a funny man. I don’t think his portrayal is vicious enough and CONNERY certainly, as does Daniel CRAIG, has that cold core that ensures the job, however distasteful, gets done.

          I’m off the subject I realise but I respectfully mention the lamentable state of modern English useage seen today. I have seen essays written by students in advanced High School education and these people cannot produce what is called ‘running’ writing, where the letters of words join in flowing format.

          Word processing has a lot for which to answer and Christian and surnames such as Roger and MOORE commence with capital letters.

    Sietse, This is a wonderful site. My Fathers all-time favorite series by far was Bond. I am 29 now and I can remember when I was a little boy watching Bond with my Dad. I have just started watching in chronological order. I am actually 3/4 thru Dr. No while typing this comment to you and before I even started, Sir Connery by far is my favorite but after reading all the comments posted, I am reserving my official vote until I have watched every movie.

    Pierce Brosnan is my fav. Too bad he was in contract doing Remington Steele when Broccoli first contacted Pierce to be cast as James Bond or he would’ve done more 007 movies for us to enjoy! They (R.S.) wouldn’t allow Pierce to do any “Bond” movies… but, they allowed him to do other movies, like, Nomads, Taffin, etc. while under contract… so sad! Broccoli said to him (years before Remington Steele) “we want you to be James Bond one day when you get older”. One thing I never found out, is why did Broccoli take 8 years to cast Pierce after his contract was over with R.S.??? For whatever reason, he cast Timothy Dalton for 2 movies then 007 movies stalled out for 6 years before Pierce finally was cast for Goldeneye.

    Hi, thanks for putting together this extensive list. I have been watching all the James Bond’s in order by following your list. You need to make a small correction with Goldeneye’s Bond girl. At the moment you have Famke Janssen (Xenia Onatopp) as the Bond girl when she is actually the villain. It should be Natalya Simonova played by Izabella Scorupco.

    never say never again isn’t counted because it wasn’t an eon production rather a warner bros pic….that dosnt matter to me still a great film…sean connery still the best bond even after turning 50yrs old

    In Never Say Never Again, Fatima Blush was the villainess who killed by asphyxiating her victims between her thighs. The Bond Girl was killed by her early on in the movie. 007 found her dead in(literally) the waterbed.

    In NSNA Fatima BLUSH was killed by, as I recall, BOND’S fountain pen that had a small missile in it. The girl with the deadly thighs was in ‘Goldeneye’ and her name was Zenia ONATOP.

    Just came across this list, figuring it’s high time I acquired the DVD’s I don’t yet have. A very nice and thorough compendium, fun comments as well. I’d have to agree with the consensus that Sean Connery was flat out THE 007/James Bond. He had all the goodies: drop-dead handsome, suave but not effete, utterly cool in tight spots; lethal and calculating but capable of kindness, smooth sexuality, wry wit; not incapable of making a mistake here and there – he really brought to life par excellence the character Ian Fleming created on paper. Roger Moore? A bit too suave, sense of humor more puckish, played into more ridiculous situations. Pierce Brosnan? Pretty good but not up to my above-listed standards.
    Conversely, I have a lot of trouble with Daniel Craig’s James Bond. An effective 007 certainly, but not the tall, dark, handsome and sophisticated character Sean Connery gave us. There’s a grimness about him and we don’t see the humorous by-play with Q (nor his flirtatious side, e.g. with Moneypenny) as it used to be. To me, he seems more like a converted top Russian agent, and I’d be tempted to call him “Michael Redding.” (known to his former Soviet colleagues as “Mikhail the Red.”)
    I’ve just finished re-reading an excellent photo-documentary book covering most of the Bond films, titled “James Bond – The Secret World of 007.” Publisher is DK (www.dk.com). All kinds of detail about the missions, characters, gadgets, with excellent photos and drawings. I’d highly recommend it to any serious Bond fan who doesn’t already own it!

    I haven’t read all the comments. But here are some corrections/additions. The Bond formula has almost always had a ‘bad girl’ and a ‘good girl’ in it; with James ending up with the ‘good girl’. The ‘bad girl’ usually ends up dead. In ‘Goldeneye’, yes, Famke Janssen was in it, but she was the ‘bad’ girl. The ‘good girl’, the ‘Bond’ girl, was Izabella Scorupco as Natalya Simonova. And you’ve never heard of her again. In ‘Never Say Never Again, which yes, IS a Bond film, and is basically a remake of ‘Thunderball’; Barb Carrera was the ‘bad girl’, Kim Bassinger was the ‘good girl’ Domino (even the same name as Claudine Auger in ‘Thunderball’).
    Monica Bellucci as Lucia Sciarra will be the ‘good girl’ in the upcoming ‘SPECTRE’ film; no Penelope Cruz.
    Also below re: Russian villains: In ‘From Russia With Love’, not only was Rosa Klebb a villain, but the most sinister one was the assassin Grant, chillingly played by a blonde Robert Shaw.
    Finally, as has been said below, the first Bond film on the big screen was the original ‘Casino Royale’, with a miscast David Niven as 007. But it IS a Bond film.
    I like Daniel Craig, but the epitome of James Bond has been the great Sean Connery.
